Jonathan Mauk, 59, was killed on Monday (5) after accidentally hitting a car in the Walmart parking lot. Authorities say Shawntece Marie Norton, a 37-year-old woman, is the suspect in question.
Mauk’s eldest son, Matthew Mauk, told ABC 7 that witnesses saw Matthew’s father get out of the car to apologize for hitting Norton’s car. “That’s when the other person shot him”, he told the station.
“There’s a scratch on the fender. There are no dents, no significant damage. There’s just a scratch. That’s the severity of the collision for which he lost his life,” Matthew Mauk told ABC 7.
Shawntece Marie Norton was arrested the following day and is being charged with murder. Mauk’s son told “KTLA” newspaper that he will continue to seek justice. Norton pleaded not guilty during her initial hearing this week, according to the outlet. She is scheduled to return to court on February 15.
The death of Jonathan Mauk has shocked loved ones and family members of the victim, who remember him as a man who loved his family, was passionate about classic cars, and a friend you could count on.
Lee Hall, a friend of Mauk’s eldest son, said he cried when he received the news. “That’s what he loved – cars. He probably would’ve fixed the lady’s car for free, but she ended up shooting him,” Hall told KTLA.
Jonathan Mauk leaves behind three children and two grandchildren.
